Why are you coughing?

Why are you coughing?

By Nutritionist Jaden

Cough is one of the ways our body respond to the irritation on our throat or airways. It pushes some air out from our lungs to remove the irritant. Coughing occasionally is normal, however if the cough lasts for longer time, it can be very annoying.

It may cause difficulty in sleeping, talking, eating and affecting some daily activities which can leave you feel exhausted. For cough that lasts less than 3 weeks, it is considered “acute”, while for cough that lasts longer than 8 weeks, it is considered “chronic”.

Some causes of acute cough are:

  • Common cold
  • Irritant (smoke, dust, chemical or foreign substances)
  • Infection (influenza, pneumonia)

Some causes of chronic cough are:

  • Allergies
  • Asthma
  • Postnasal drip
  • Gastroesophageal reflux

Some natural remedies or health supplements can help to relieve the symptoms of cough where you can seek for advice at pharmacy nearby. Coughing may seem normal, but it may due to or leads to more serious diseases. Therefore, if the cough lasts for a long period of time, especially coughing out blood or seriously disturbing daily life, it is advisable to visit a doctor for appropriate treatment.
